Mandelic acid is one of AHA (alpha hydroxy) acids. It gently exfoliates skin and consequently – rejuvenates, not causing irritations. It is cut out for the problematic skin types. What qualities does mandelic acid have and how it works? What does the treatment look like and who is it designed for?
Mandelic acid is applied to the skin for the same purpose as other alpha-hydroxy acids, namely, to even out the skin tone and stimulate its repair. Mandelic acid skin exfoliation brightens, tightens, smoothes and moisturises skin, and makes pores less visible. In the case of acne-prone skin, it reduces sebum secretion. Mandelic acid is stronger than glycolic acid but it is composed of larger molecules so it penetrates the skin more slowly and doesn’t cause irritations.
How does mandelic acid work?
Mandelic acid works on the cornified layer of the skin. It relaxes connections between the epidermis cells and cellular cement. As a result, it exfoliates dead skin cells. The exfoliation using this acid is both delicate and effective – strikingly lightens skin. Exposed young cells easily absorb applied products, therefore mandelic acid is often combined with moisturising products. Depending on the needs of the skin, you can use antibacterial mandelic and pyruvic acids or mandelic acid and microdermabrasion (mechanical skin exfoliation).
Mandelic acid – who is it for?
People whose skin is problematic – sensitive, vascular, combination or acne-prone – should decide on mandelic acid exfoliation. It is equally effective for mature skin. Mandelic acid improves the condition of sensitive skin which stops reacting nervously to the elements. In the case of acne skin, it reduces sebum secretion and dries blemishes out. When it comes to benefits for ageing skin, the complexion gets radiant, firm and hydrated.
Mandelic acid treatment – procedure
Exfoliating skin with mandelic acid improves skin condition after just one treatment. For better results, a series of six treatments once a week is recommended. Thanks to performing it, the effect is longer-lasting. Mandelic acid exfoliation should be done twice a year. During the treatment and three weeks later, we can’t sunbath, use sunbeds or go out without sun protection (SPF 25 is the minimum).
